Funded by The Ark Trust [which
was established in 2000 to provide the financial and support base from which
to carry out special in-situ programmes beyond The Ark’s custom-built
centre in Temple Bar], ArkMobile was the touring arm of the Ark. It brought
theatre, workshops and exhibitions around the country to children who would
not normally be able to take part in the programme in Dublin. The Trust
raised significant funds from individuals, corporations, foundations and
the public sector with which to finance this work.
Recent touring Ark programmes include:
Leonardo da Vinci: The Art of Invention
The Ark created an exhibition of interactive models based on the drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci, complemented by an extensive series of activities, which encouraged children to think creatively about the science, mechanics and art of Leonardo da Vinci.
The Ark installed the machines in schools for a period of 2 weeks, and provided 2 days of teacher training, during which teachers were enabled to facilitate a tour of the exhibition with their own class. Teachers then lead children in a hands-on investigation of Leonardo's machines, and the many multi-disciplinary concepts that are associated with them.
Inklings – a story writing and illustration programme for 4-8 year olds
The Ark brought 'Inklings', a story-writing and illustration programme into the school environment and guided groups of children as they create their very own, beautifully produced, hand made book.
This visual arts programme encouraged literacy skills while also giving plenty of scope for imaginative concepts and illustration. Bringing 'Inklings' into the school context provided the opportunity for on-site research into the links between literacy and visual literacy and the possibility of providing Inklings on a national scale.
