Children’s Crafts Club 2017 28 - 29 Jan 2017

Try your hand at a variety of fun traditional crafts using different natural materials at this year’s Tradfest Children’s Crafts Club for Ages 4+.

Craftspeople of the past and present have found inspiration in the plants, animals and landscapes of the Irish woodlands. They explore the forests, foraging for natural materials to make beautiful crafts. This year the Tradfest Crafts club follows in their footsteps and looks to the woods for inspiration. Come and try your hand at some of these natural crafts in our drop in sessions led by three exciting craft artists.

Presented in partnership with the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland as part of TradFest Temple Bar 2017

Craft Session Descriptions

  • CLAY: Have fun with ceramic artist Maeve Sookram who will show you how to make a fairy door which you will decorate taking inspiration from nature - flowers, leaves, mushrooms or even woodland creatures. You can paint and varnish your doors when they dry out at home.
  • FELT: Create your own woodland in wool with textile artist Liadain Butler. You will learn basic traditional felt-making techniques as Liadain shows you how to turn wool fibres into strong pieces of felt, using hot water, soap and friction. Then add in your own details with colourful wool fibres to make a beautiful picture inspired by nature.
  • PRINT: Visual Artist Jane Groves invites you to explore the wonders of the woodlands, a microcosm of insects, bark, leaves, light and shadow. Transform the treasures of the forest into beautiful prints to take home. You will firstly draw your print design onto foam block and then use printing inks and rollers to print onto a selection of papers.
