We were delighted to offer the 2004 Fatima Arklink calendar online. It was the fourth calendar produced by Arklink celebrating the creativity of the children of Fatima Mansions.
The 2004 calendar documents the demolition process going on around the children daily, placing it alongside a selection of their own collaborative artworks. The result is a celebration of the children's friendship and togetherness and a reminder of their humour, sensitivities and astuteness.
The Ark is extremely grateful to all involved in the production of the calendar and the ongoing work of Arklink - especially to the children, parents, artists and dedicated team in Fatima. We also extend our sincere thanks to Atlantic Philanthropies and the Irish Youth Foundation for their ongoing commitment to Arklink
Presented in Dec 2004 and Jan 2005A Seasonal, Musical Adventure for young audiences at The Ark, Temple Bar.
The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children, rang with the sound of children's laughter and singing when Rudolf the Red, an original musical adventure opened for the Christmas season on December 13th.
Rudolf the Red tells the story of how it was that reindeer got into the sleigh pulling business. Children met the reindeer Dascha, Donna, Viktor and of course Rudolf in this show filled with hoof stomping tunes that were guaranteed to stick in your head long after the Christmas pudding is eaten.
Rudolf the Red was created as a seasonal treat for young children. The intimate surrounds of The Ark's theatre, specially designed for children, made this show a perfect introduction to theatre for the audience of 4-6 year olds. The traditional boundaries between performer and audience do not exist at the Ark and children were swept into all the fun on stage.
The Ark was delighted to have Annie Ryan, director of the Corn Exchange, at the helm for her Ark debut, and to welcome back David Boyd, a stalwart of many favourite Ark shows, as musical director. Together with a hilariously inventive cast including Louis Lovett, Fergal McElherron, Fiona Condon and Clare Barrett, and a fabulous design team of Ferdia Murphy, Sinead McKenna and Sinead Cuthbert.
Rudolf the Red was devised by the cast under the direction of Annie Ryan, based on an original idea by David Boyd, who has also composed the original music.
Presented in Nov 2004A visual arts mosaic programme for 8-14 year olds
In November, The Ark found itself in the mysterious world of the carnivorous plant!
Workshop participants learned more about these plants and discovered their darkest secrets. Children worked with ceramic artist Laura O’Hagan to design and make part of a monstrous plant mosaic. The finished artwork is permanently installed in The Ark’s roof garden.
Five Dublin schools also took part in workshops over a five-week period. Their finished mosaics were exhibited in their schools and also in the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin before being installed in The Ark’s roof garden.
The Ark would like to thank Tile Market for sponsoring this programme.
February 16th - March 19th
Inklings gave children aged 4-8 years the opportunity to enter the world of the professional illustrator/author and create their very own innovative children's books. Working alongside established illustrators the children conjured up stories that featured surreal detours, multiple endings, engaging tales, wacky characters, strange animals and all sorts of outrageous beings! The children used a wide variety of media to create these wonderfully imaginative illustrations to culminate in the making of these web books for the world to see, read and enjoy.
