More About The Ark

1. The Ark is a 16,000 sq. foot (1,500 sq. metre) arts centre housing theatres, galleries and a workshop. The centre provides programmes across the arts for children aged between 4 and 14 years and their families.

2. The Ark is not a centre that you can visit on a ‘drop-in’ basis to view a permanent exhibition or a fixed programme. The programme changes regularly and ranges across the arts. We present plays, exhibitions, workshops, festivals, concerts, readings, opera, dance, multimedia and much more. Many of these are participative and interactive.

3. The Ark presents work for specific age bands. Our programmes are designed so that their form and content are appropriate to the different development levels of children.

4. The Ark offers programmes for primary schools during school time and for individual children and family groups at other times. Opening times vary according to the particular programme.

5. The Ark’s programmes are often interactive. There is making and doing as well as listening and viewing. Our staff members work closely with small groups of children to ensure a high-quality personally meaningful experience.

6. The Ark creates most of its programmes and is constantly commissioning and engaging artists from all disciplines to make work for, with, and about children.

7. The Ark charges modestly for admission to all its programmes. The main costs of running the building, staffing it and devising and presenting the in-house programmes are met from the public purse (The Arts Council; the Department of Education; FAS; Dublin Corporation). A range of individual donors, corporate sponsors and foundations provide significant additional support. The Ark is always glad to hear from individuals and companies interested in sponsoring or otherwise supporting its work.

8. The Ark’s social policy is to be as inclusive as possible while working within available financial resources. In any year, The Ark will organise a number of projects for children who are particularly disadvantaged socio-economically. The Ark also fields large outreach initiatives, where staff members work intimately with children from disadvantaged communities as well as children in a variety of health care environments. For more details on this see the Outreach section.
