Meg Rosoff
Why not come to a reading by celebrated young adult fiction author Meg Rosoff?
Meg took the literary world by stealth in 2004 with her astonishing debut novel How I Live Now, an edgy, intriguing and darkly comic evocation of love amidst the horrors of war. Written for young teens but devoured by adults alike, it became a publishing sensation, snapping up the Guardian and Branford Boase awards and shortlisted for the Orange Prize and Whitbread. Please note this event is not suitable for children under 12.
In Search of Childhood
A reading of work by Nell McCafferty, Jackie Kay and Xiaolu Guo specially commissioned by Dublin Writers Festival for The Ark’s Year of Childhood.
For many writers childhood is a rich source of inspiration which he or she forever attempts to recapture. In this exclusive event, three acclaimed writers – from three very different backgrounds – revisit what Virginia Woolf termed the “vast cathedral space of childhood”. Each author will respond to the notion of childhood with a specially commissioned short talk or reading from their own unique perspective, culminating in an open discussion on the language, literature and landscape of their childhood memories. Adults are welcome, with or without children. For more information on Nell McCafferty, Jackie Kay and Xiaolu Guo see www.dublinwritersfestival.com
Derek Landy - Skulduggery Pleasant
Join the hottest new name in children's fiction reading from a bone-rattling spot of literary skulduggery.
Once in the bluest of blue moons comes a publishing phenomenon that
becomes a runaway hit before the ink is even dry on the page. Enter
stage left: Skulduggery Pleasant –
the rollercoaster best-selling children's debut from former-farmer-turned-literary-sensation;
Dublin’s own Derek Landy. Wisecracking, well- dressed and delightfully
witty, Skulduggery Pleasant is a powerful magician, master trickster
and ace burglar. Oh yeah, he's also dead!
Together with his trusty sidekick Stephanie, a 12-year-old girl, Skulduggery’s
genre busting comic-horror-adventures are played out against a gripping
backdrop of murder, mystery, magic and revenge.
While you’re in literary mode, why not take the time to look at our exhibition of the books created by children from 5th and 6th class in St James Senior National School, Dublin 8; St Ann’s National School, Tallaght and Assumption Senior National School, Walkinstown, during the very successful Bookmarks workshop earlier this year. Admission is free.
