Summer at The Ark – visual arts
Ever wondered what it’s like to BE an artist?
This summer make and exhibit your own work in a Dublin city centre venue
14 July – 22
August
The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children
This summer at The Ark its ART 360°, where you get the chance to
encounter a range of visual arts activities. From making art, with all
kinds of diverse materials, to exhibiting your work: a true multi-media
experience. Get your senses involved in bringing out the artist in you
in two fantastic visual arts programmes at The Ark this summer.
The fun starts 8 July when The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children in association
with Temple Bar Cultural Trust’s The Summer Sensational presents Feast
for The Senses. From 8 -12 July at The Ark experience
5 senses - taste, touch, sight, sound and smell - in 5 workshops over 5
days in a summer sensory journey. Discover a different sense every day,
or enjoy all five, in these drop-in, hour-long visual art workshops with artist
Jane Groves.
Then from 14 July the main summer programme takes centre stage with EXHIBIT
ME! This is a unique opportunity to work alongside professional
artist Terry O’Farrell, who will guide you and inspire you to create your
very own artworks in a visual arts experience exploring the theme of FAMILY.
The experience begins in The Ark’s gallery, where you will view
some of Terry’s work. Meet and spend time with a ‘live’ artist,
share stories about her family, her work, and have creative conversations
to explore your own ideas of family. The Ark workshop becomes your
very own studio as each week, Terry introduces a range of exciting
materials and techniques with which you can experiment. Everything you
see and touch can be inspiration for the creation of your piece of art
and each Sunday you can bring your whole family along to take part in
the dedicated family workshops. The exhibition will be curated by Ashleigh
Downey, The Ark’s Visual Arts Programmer, in collaboration with
the artist Terry O’Farrell.
You can also have your work showcased in The Ark gallery alongside Terry’s
work in an evolving exhibition open Wednesday to Sunday throughout the
summer. So bring your family and friends along to see your creation on
display alongside other new works which will be added to the exhibition
each week.
Each week in the workshops you can make different types of art Clay

Explore the Art of Pop Up at The Ark
30th March –12th June 2010
We all love pop ups and 3D creations. Dating back many centuries
interactive mechanisms have ‘popped up’ in many forms and
still do!
From 30th March -12th June explore the art of the pop up in
small group workshops with artist Liz Smith in The Ark, A Cultural Centre
for Children.
Discover how to construct impressive 3D pop-ups with impact and movement by using a variety of papers, cards and creative techniques. Pop up animals, flowers, planes, trains and lots more will be created in these workshops. Public and school workshops will run over the next few months. Public workshops are priced at only €10 (concs €8) and schools workshops are €6.50 (concs €4.50), with special Easter holiday public workshops. Based on three separate themes the workshops will look at different interpretations of the pop up.
For the Easter holidays (from 30th March) the workshop is entitled Spring Up! where participants will create lively pop up illustrations of springing lambs, jumping rabbits, blossoming flowers and more, that can jump, swing or spring!
Then as we look forward to the summer, we turn our attention to Pop-up Travels (from 21st April). The second workshop will take its inspiration from summer time, day trips and travel. Whether it’s a day out to the park, the beach, a walk in the country, journeying further afield or even in your imagination, it can all be inspiration for pops ups.
The third workshop will focus on animals. In Animal Magic make a pop up of your favourite animal or even create a new species (from 25th May). What animal would you like to create, where does it live, what does it eat and what will it look like in your pop up? Then using the techniques learned from artist Liz Smith participants bring that animal to life.
Depending on the age of the children, they will be taught different skills to create their very own pop up. Public workshops running over the Easter holidays and on weekends are designed for two age groups, children ages 3-6 and ages 7+.

The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children and Dublin Dance Festival present
Children’s Season 2010
at The Ark, Temple Bar
For children and their families
Interactive family dance workshops with Colin Dunne
(May 18th & 20th)
This May a treat awaits for children, their families and friends - a
fascinating dance show from France presented by La BaZooKa - MonStreS. This
unique show was co-programmed by The Ark and Dublin Dance Festival and will
be presented at The Ark for 3 days only (public and schools performances)
from May 13th – 15th.
Inspired by mirrors, kaleidoscopes and labyrinths, MonStreS is a fascinating
dance show for children, families and schools. Set in a circle of mirrors,
and with playful human creatures, MonStreS, is a dance experience which
has been created especially for children by French company, La BaZooKa.
The show draws on 1950s fantasy films and includes music from Six Pianos
by Steve Reich.
This is a one-off experience for ages 4-7 and their families, a riveting
exploration of dance, reflection and lights.
For the past few years The Ark has worked with the Dublin Dance Festival
to co-programme exciting and innovative dance experiences for children and
families. This year they are adding a very special workshop opportunity
to the programme.
On the 18th & 20th May renowned dancer Colin Dunne will run interactive
workshops in Irish step dance at The Ark. These workshops are suitable for
children and families who want to gain an appreciation of how to move to
Irish music in a relaxed and fun way. Participants will learn some basic
steps and will be encouraged to make some of their own.
Colin Dunne is a leading figure in the world of traditional Irish dance,
contemporary dance and theatre. Since performing internationally as the
principal dancer in Riverdance, he has created a highly individual style
of performance and teaching. He has been nominated twice for a UK Critics
Circle National Dance Award: in 2007 (Best Male: Modern Dance) for performances
in Fabulous Beast’s production of The Bull, and in 2009 (Best Male
Dancer) for performances of his solo show Out of Time. Out of Time has also

Unique actor training initiative is underway at The Ark
In his continuing role as Theatre-Maker in Residence at The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children, Louis Lovett is currently working with actors focusing on creating work for young audiences. This is the first time that this has taken place in Ireland.
The first part of this Theatre-Maker in Residence initiative was the world premiere of The Girl who Forgot to Sing Badly, starring Louis Lovett, written by Finegan Kruckemeyer and directed by Lynne Parker. This production, presented by The Ark in association with Theatre Lovett, ran earlier this year and received huge critical acclaim.
"chock full with playfulness and rich ideas. ...... Lovett makes the experience seem as natural and interactive as a warm hug" The Irish Times
'endlessly entertaining... I absolutely loved it ... it was fantastic.'
'an absolute gem of a production... why can't all theatre be like this?' The View RTÉ "
**** ...compelling ...... throw in a villain called Peter, a mouse called Hildegard, a boat and a heap of wordplay, and you've as much for adults as for children." Metroherald
Louis Lovett has a long association with The Ark as a writer, director and actor, having performed over 500 times on The Ark stage. He is also one of Ireland's most experienced performers for young people and his work crosses over both theatre for adults and theatre for young people.
Louis is currently working with twenty actors on a unique training opportunity for actors presented by The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children and Louis Lovett, in association with Theatre Forum.
This is a module of training for actors and students of acting. Under Louis' guidance, actors are being given the opportunity to explore the spirit of the child at play - an essential component for any practitioner in providing quality children's theatre. Louis' own unique style of physical theatre embraces this spirit of play and this training opportunity will contribute greatly to the pool of Irish based practitioners interested in bringing high quality work to young audiences.
The residency also includes two other strands, outreach and teacher training.
Community Outreach Strand: Louis will work with a number of children from Blanchardstown Travellers Development Group who will experience interactive live theatre in their own environment.
Teacher Training Strand: The residency will include the provision of a workshop for trainee teachers from St Patrick's Teacher Training College Drumcondra, Froebel Teacher Training College, and Mary Immaculate Teacher Training College Limerick. Louis will also host a workshop for practicing teachers with a focus on teachers' own creativity at The Ark on Saturday 17 April. This is open to all practicing teachers (though advance applications are necessary) and applications are still being accepted for this.
The Ark gratefully acknowledges the support of the Arts Council in making the residency possible, as well being part funded by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism and the Irish Youth Foundation. The Ark is also grateful to its other annual supporters: Department of Education and Science; National Development Plan; PPDS; Temple Bar Cultural Trust and Dublin City Council.

Eina McHugh, Director of The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children said ‘We believe that our first theatre maker in residence is a really strong initiative that keeps high quality art at the centre of everything we do and allows us to deliver maximum impact for the vital territory that is children and families, schools, communities and artists’.
More details of elements of the theatre maker in residence initiative
will be announced but The Ark has confirmed that it will include a collaboration
on a world premiere for 2010 The Girl who Forgot to Sing Badly,

There will be a particular emphasis on providing opportunities for teachers to engage with and enjoy their own creativity.
